hi Wendy. You will want a retinal specialist to review your eyes before going ahead with surgery - this is the safest approach if you have had previous retinal detachment (RD) surgery. There isn't a statistical increased risk of RD from LASIK but I prefer a full review before going ahead. Any LASIK you choose should involve a modern femtosecond laser (Ziemer LDV, Intralase iFS etc) and should include wavefront and aspheric treatment options.
Best regards, David

Hi,
I had retinal detachment about 15 years ago and had it treated. I did the pre- examination for the lasik a few years back. And it's a green light, meaning I can go ahead with it. But I'm holding back because I'm worried about the risks. Will the risks be higher in my case? And what kind of lasik do u recommend?

Hi Kathy
The studies I quoted were the ones that looked at this issue, and they suggest that LASIK doesn’t increase the risk of detachment. Short-sighted people are more prone to detachments and also have LASIK, so it's important to screen the retina fully before doing LASIK
Regards

I had Lasik in Dec of 2007. I how have a blind spot in my left eye. I went to the eye doctor and found out that I have a hole in my left eye and a tear in my right eye. I would like to know if the Lasik had anything to do with my problem now.
