Hi NG
Laser treatment is reversible actually so even if you didnt like the blended vision approach, this could be changed back to full distance vision.
1. For microscopy and blended vision, if your microscope has a dioptre focus adjustment on each eye-piece, then there is no problem as you would set the reading eye to the same clarity as the 'distance' eye.
2. We don't see night vision problems with distance vision correction with our WaveLight laser. If you opt for blended vision where one is is left mildly myopic by design, you can get some night glare from that eye but it usually isn't problematic or noticed by patients.
3. Chance of enhancement from the first treatment is about 1%. You may want to top up the reading eye in your 60s but it may not be necessary.
4. Laser eye surgery would not increase any risk you have for AMD, wet or dry.
Hope that helps you!
Regards, Dave

Dear David,
I have thought of some other querries for you:
1. I do a great deal of microscopy, looking at blood films, and my morphology I am told is very good so I do not want to jeopordise that, is there any chance of laser treatment doing that?
2. What is the incidence of starring, ghosting, foging etc, etc. Basically affected night vision?
3. I am now 53, what is the probability of having to have more laser surgeries to enhance a correction?
4. My mother is being treated for wet AMD in one eye and has dry AMD in the other, as her brother also suffered and her cousin is suffering also, would laser surgery put me at a greater risk.
5. Appologies for all the Qs, as the procedure is expensive, frightening and irreversible I need to be sure.

Dear Dave,

You have been most helpful, I now have to find out if my corneas are the correct thickness.

Dear NG. We correct distance and near sight through 'blended vision' and this is a treatment in which we specialise. This is where one eye is weighted for far and the other weighted for near but still allowing the eyes to 'blend' together for clear vision. Cost would be £1997 per eye normally, although we do offer discount on blended vision for NHS employees.
Best regards, Dave

Dear David,

Many thanks for that.
You also mention that both near anfd far sightedness can be treated, how is this done, is one eye treated for long sight and the other for short sightedness, and most importantly what is the cost approximately? :)

PS: do you do any discounts for NHS employees

Regards

Dear NG. Yes, usually no further investigation for a single event of uveitis. Recurrent disease is different, as you were told. Regarding LASIK and uveitis, it is still possible. The patient must be in a quiescent phase with no active inflammation, plus a disease free interval before surgery of 4-6 months. A 2008 investigation into LASIK and HLA-B27 positive patients found "The occurrence rate of post-LASIK acute anterior uveitis in the HLA-B27 positive population was not higher than the general incidence in a similar HLA-B27 population without previous LASIK. A previous episode of uveitis did not appear to increase the risk for uveitis after LASIK in HLA-B27 positive patients." You may or may not be HLA-B27 positive, but even if you were, appears not to increase risk of another attack above the baseline risk of recurrence.
This is not related to contact lens use. Lens wear is associated with infections but you would have been told at Moorfields if there was a corneal infection. It is reasonable to have a consultation and plan for treatment in 2-3 months assuming no further attack.
Best regards, Dave

Dear Dave,
yes first attack and hopefully last as no cause could be found at Moorfield eye hospital. No further tests other than the eye drops and the usuall array of steroids. I was told if it returns then the HLAB27 etc would have to be done to find out the cause, but I donot have any connective tissue problems so personally the only reason I can think of is perhaps an infection due to the contact lens.
any thoughts??

Regards

Dear NG, From your prescription, laser eye correction for both distance and reading is certainly an option and something we do commonly. Is this your first attack of uveitis? Have you had that investigated in more detail at to the cause?
Best regards, Dave

Dear DaveI have been wearing contact lenses since my teens, my eyesight has become progresivly worse now i am in my 50s and i now also need rading glasses, to top it all i sufferd uvitis approximately 3 months ago in my left eye, and seem to be finding it uncomfortable to wear my contact lense in the L. eye, so i am now wondering if laser eye surgery is now out of the question and i now have to cope with wearing glasses, which i find very uncomfortable as my prescription is -4in one eye and -4.5 in the other. i would be grateful for any advise you can give

thank you
